Internet Mail List's

Internet Mail Lists are discussion forums distributed via email. The most important thing about subscribing (and unsubscribing) is you have to DO IT RIGHT. To get yourself on or off a list, send your e-mail instructions to the LISTSERV address. Don't send them to the rest of the subscribers (the LIST address).

Once you're subscribed, you'll start receiving email from the list address. Don't forget to save a copy of the subscription confirmation message which tells you how to unsubscribe. Some lists have a "digest" option which send batches of messages in a single file, as opposed to receiving each message on a piecemeal basis. If you don't have an Internet account or a subscription to an online service (America Online, CompuServe, Prodigy) you can participate through MC-BBS's or MediaLink's message bases.

Description: AS/400 eBusiness topics.

APPC Discussion List

Description: APPC programming topics. Not much traffic, but highly technical questions usually get answered.

Code/400 Mailing List

Description: This Internet list was created for users of CODE/400 and VRPG. If you're looking for "how to" talk on using the LPEX editor, setting up code servers, managing CODE/400 and VRPG projects, tips, techniques, and tricks, this could be the place to find it. Vincent Greene, of Borzak Enterprises, is the list owner and moderator of the new forum. This list is also available in MediaLink BBS's AS/400 Forum section and MC-BBS's Code-400 message base.

The IBM Announcements List

Description: This is a one-way list - no email is accepted, only delivered. On January 30, 1995, IBM began publishing its traditional Tuesday announcements via an Internet listserver. The announcements cover IBM's wide range of hardware and software products and services (which can be a lot of material).

Subscribing is a two-part process. First, send an email message as described above. You'll receive IBM's US Announcement Letter category form and instructions on how to use it, which is the second part. Just copy and paste it into an editor, select the type of information you want to receive, and send it back to the list address. Each time there's an announcement that meets your criteria it'll automatically be sent to your email address.

The Midrange Internet Mailing List

Description: Midrange-L is a great list for AS/400 beginners and gurus alike. Average traffic is over 30 messages per day. Topics are usually technical in nature: RPG, CL, C/S programming; connectivity issues; operations; performance; etc. Vendors are also present here, including IBM. Everyone plays by the same rules. Midrange-L is also a node on the Fidonet network, which is operated out of the pockets of the sysops. Over quoting in replies and off-topic posting are frowned upon due to the expense of distributing the message traffic. A digest feature may be available in the future.

The Midrange Jobs Mailing List

Description: David Gibbs, owner of the Midrange-L list, was running this list for the midrange system job market. It was closed due to the low volume of traffic.

The Midrange Mailing List

Description: This is a fairly new list not to be confused with Gibbs' Midrange-L list.
Martin Taylor, of the The University of Tennessee's Computing and Administrative Information Systems Department, created it for the discussion of midrange computing. This list just recently began accepting job postings. Subscriptions can be password protected. One interesting aspect of this new list mentioned in the subscription confirmation notice: "This system may accept Internet TCP/IP connections for processing of live requests, and the password will be used to give you subscriber privileges." For more information, send a 'help live' request to the listserv.

POWER-PC List

Description: "The POWER-PC list was created to discuss the IBM POWER-PC computers based upon the IBM/Motorola PowerPC architecture processor line. Discussion can include personal RISC systems, technical workstations, notebook systems, and both midrange and high performance NIC systems based upon these processors." Traffic is pretty low but you can get archives by sending for the index.
